Miles Davis
(b. 5/25/26 - Alton, IL    d. 9/28/91 - New York, NY)

Title: Workin' With The Miles Davis Quintet
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor sax), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), Philly Joe Jones (drums).
Recorded: 1956
Label: Prestige
Comments: Having got his start in Charlie Parker's band in the 1940's, Miles Davis would go on to "legend" status over the years, his career spanning five decades. A constantly changing artist, Miles would create one band, see it to it's completion over a few years, then begin anew with all new musicians, never to return to the old material. This band of the 1950's was his first "classic" band, subsequently making this CD, one of five in a series pumped out to fulfill a contractual obligation with Prestige (along with, "Steamin'," "Relaxin'," "Cookin'," and "Walkin'").
Title: Kind of Blue
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor sax), Julian "Cannonball" Adderley (alto sax), Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums).
Recorded: 1959
Label: Columbia
Comments: Another "desert island" CD, Kind of Blue is as close to perfect as a music document gets. Seeking the freshness of a first experience, Miles only brought in sketches of his tunes, hoping to capture the special moment that can only happen when a musician plays a tune for the very first time. In fact, nearly all the takes are "first" takes, and subsequently, this CD captures one of the most unique moments in music history.

Title: The Complete Concert 1964 - My Funny Valentine + Four & More
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet), George Coleman (tenor sax), Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass), Tony Williams (drums).
Recorded: 1964
Label: Columbia
Comments: This band was known for it's spunk amongst it's musicians. Miles was the "old" man, in his mid-30's when everyone else was in his twenties (Tony Williams was 17 when he joined this band!). Tony Williams was the star, though, as this child prodigy made chins drop with his technique and impressive presence. His ideas were totally, completely new at the time, confounding his fellow musicians as to how such a young boy could come up with such incredible ideas at such a young age.
