All you drum-heads out there know about the industry of instructional videos detailing the latest rhythms on the drumset. From keeping good jazz time to heavy metal drumming to Latin clave, there's a video to show you how to become a better drummer.

Now comes along a very special drumming DVD that takes this experience to a whole new level. In "Fred Armisen Presents: Jens Hannemann Complicated Drumming Technique," you too can learn how to play in 9/21 time while working on your paradiddledoos:

In a scene from his latest instructional DVD, this vaguely Teutonic musician has just finished demonstrating the step-by-step mechanics of an overly elaborate rhythm: in this case a two-handed drum pattern from his song "Just in Time" that he illustrates by calling out the words "left" and "right," seemingly at random, about 31 times in a row. Then he turns to the camera and with a straight face tells his would-be pupils, "You might want to memorize that for when you're practicing at home."

Perfect!

Oh, but there's more:

In response he created the character of Hannemann, an earnest, long-haired percussionist whose methods are as inscrutable as his accent, who plays his perversely intricate compositions on a suitably ornate 18-piece drum kit (not counting cymbals) and who sees no contradiction in using four kick drums despite possessing only two feet.

"It's like a nerd world of drums," said Mr. Armisen. "If anything, I'm celebrating them. Seriously."

"My dream," he said, "is for it to be in music stores and for someday at least one person to buy it and go, 'This is a lie.' Someone goes back to the store and goes, 'I think this guy is making stuff up.'"
