The great bassist, Dennis Irwin, has passed...
March 10, 2008 11:31 PM

It is truly a sad day in the world of jazz as one of our most beloved musicians died yesterday. Dennis Irwin, who played with everyone since beginning his career in the '70's, starting with Betty Carter in 1976 and followed by a three year stint with Art Blakey, was a mainstay in the Village Vanguard Orchestra for years.

Dennis was truly a one-of-a-kind person and jazz musician, so caring and giving, willing to stay up all night to play and talk and live and experience. You knew it was Dennis on the bass when his gorgeous sound filled up the entire room, often with no amp, swinging his ass off!

He really was one of those truly unique and original human beings on this planet who profoundly touched everyone he came in contact with...

He was diagnosed with cancer only a few months ago and was only 56 years old when he died.

This New York Times article, which discusses Dennis' ordeal, along with that of fellow alto saxophonist, Andrew D'Angelo, details the fact that most jazz musicians have no health insurance. It also discusses the role of The Jazz Foundation of America in helping musicians who need it most. Please give to this organization, in addition to MusicCares...two essential organizations that help musicians in times of need.
